Tale of Spring Love

Tale of Spring Love < PreviousNext >
These are Globular Springtails (aka Garden Springtails) [Sminthurus something!] They are about half a millimetre long and appear like dots to the naked eye. They're called springtails because they have a 'leg' folded up underneath them that springs out and fires them away from danger. For those who didn't see David Attenborough's Insect show a few months ago, these two are going through a courtship ritual here. The smaller black springtail is the male, and the larger red springtail is a the female. The male attempts to impress the female by running at her. He grabs her antennae with his and pushes against her. If he's strong enough, or persistent enough, the female will allow him to mate with her. Unfortunately, despite his attempts, this little guy was eventually shrugged off by the female and they went their separate ways. So small are these critters that they are still small in this photo despite me using all my extension tubes - the same magnification as this photo!

I've been trying out 'super-macro' today, by putting my 50mm lens backwards on my 300mm zoom lens (that has a macro mode). I shall post my attempts with this setup soon, including one of these little guys!
