Female Soldier Beetle

Female Soldier Beetle < PreviousNext >
This is a closeup of a female soldier beetle who was enduring the romantic advances of a male soldier beetle, seen peering round the left of this picture. It was taken using a 50mm lens reversed on the front of a set of extension tubes (adding up to 63mm) which were on the end of a 2x converter. I used a Vivitar 6000AF ring flash. This is the whole image - no cropping or touching up. I have absolutely no idea what that strange white string coming from her head is - perhaps she had bad hayfever.
