Magellanic Penguin

This is one of the Megellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) that inhabit a small pool near the entrance to Marwell Zoo. Magellanic penguins are so named because they were first seen in 1519 by Ferdinand Magellan, and they live in South America, on the rocky shores of Argentina and Chile. The pink around the eyes of this penguin is because it has lost its feathers in that area, which happens to this particular species during the warm season.
