This is a male Black-Tailed Skimmer dragonfly (Orthetrum cancellatum). The males are blue and the females yellow. He was flying off and coming back to the same spot, this dead stick, so was ideal to stake out. Unfortunately, he wouldn't hang around for any reversed lens macros, so this was taken with my zoom in macro mode which didn't give great results on the whole although this turned out ok.

Update: Thanks to Kate below, this is infact a Scarce Chaser dragonfly (Libellula fulva), which is in fact a very rare dragonfly. So, woo! As Kate says, it's the black diamonds at the base of the wing and the blue eyes that give it away.
